Friday. Cossie's carriage rattled up to the door at 11 last night-so welcome & full of meaningasI lay in bed & listened I thought "When will it come with cheery sound as so often before?" She had supper by my side. We did not talk long she was so worn with this ten days of unremitting toil. All day she worked with her business men, her temperance coadjutors, her servants getting things ready. In my den upstairs we went over a stack of papers I had to talk of, after night. We slept like children & early (for her) were roused-at 6:30; breakfasted, said goodbye & away to the train. Found the Smiths, Hoodie, Mrs. Emmett &c at station, Waterloo I think, & off to the SHIP .

[entry written by Lady Henry, I think.] On the way to Southampton

I go my blessed one glad to serve as well as love. Keep a good heart; "Hearts are near tho "[.......... ] are far" and thy Cos will soon be back-all sails set to come to thee, only be careful of thytreasure & all will be well. God is our Home. Thy Cos-

[Following written by FEW] /Going to the steamer I said "You go for God &. Home & Every land" Her dark eyes twinkled & she said "For Conk & G. & H. & C.[?]" I said "Did I make thee go? [entry conintues in space for 10/3] -was I not anxious to go myself?"

She said "Certainly you were-I go first for the ransom of your presence (if you went, sick or well, they would not let you come back; & I go for the Cause & to meet my boy." We were a party of 9-tender words were between Cossie & me as we sped in the special to Southampton. The tears flowed over her cheeks as they sang "How firm a foundation" & God be with you. We went into her stateroom-Mrs. Yorke had bro't flowers-I wishedto see them placed but we were at once warned off the ship-C. threw her arms around me-we went-Bess & I down the ship's side-there we staid while the little engine took in the baggage-& saw the dear face & figure with tall young Alys Smith beside her & the other women-Emmett & [..]uff near by. Great ship-20 thousand horse power-

[entry continues in space for 10/9] 3 smoke stacks-3 spurs- American flag-a 2 million dollar ship and so huge. We staid in the rain-Hood's doings for I had promised to go away-till the great ship slowly rounded out to sea. And I had tears-& life seemed so changeful & pathetic-& I wished we were all of us "in the ether"-which we are already if we but know it. I thought of little Nan & her heroic spirit & behavior & thanked God who had given me two such inner heart comrades.
