tumult about the Autumn Conventions of Worlds & Nat[.] WCTU Oct 16-21. Shall I be able to go home? Will Isabel? It now looks as if I shall & yet Dr. B W Richardson forbade any public work for 1 year. The whole subject is open at both ends-waiting developments. Isabel's opponents are briskly on the war path here as mine are yonder-but leaders must always expect this. We worked all day on letters[,]-papers &c.-too rainy to go out. I am getting flesh & Cossie losing it-which is what we both desire. Funny letter from nice Stead-excellent plan from Josephine Butler for work [?] in Italy.

Among the meannesses of the competitive system I have few better illustrations than the menials in hotels who have neither eyes nor ears for any save those whom they know will be a money-means to them then & there. The debauching of self-respect in these is reason enough for the coming in of socialism-may the day hasten! Cozzie & I would go out for a walk-a heavy rain caught us-I said "If we were not Gideon Band women we would go back"-behold we got wet through & she has a great joke on me from this out!

Rainy-busy all day with letters-books & papers. So glad we have nice rooms & fire. C. got off the First Annual Leaflet of BWTA which will be lots of help to her women. Indeed we have done a good bit of work since we came here and planned & talked not a little about the future of the societies whose interests are so near & whose members so dear to us. Heaven help us to be true & loyal to each other.

I am living over as clearly as if I saw them in a mirror my blessed one's last days on earth-one year ago. She was 14 days ill & all but the last 4 was cheery & bright, her very own dear self-serene and glad to go Home to God and her Beloved ones in the Better Life. So weak & wan, so faint & breathless yet full of all delightful looks & words & tones to every one of us.

Was ill & did not rise.

Lying in bed [and crossed out] attended by a nice Swiss Dr. who gives me salycilic acid & later on rhubard[? looks like d not b] powders. I am just as mother was in symptoms almost always when ill-painless but with fever & diarrhea. No more tender nurse than Cossie ever could be. Thinking sommat [?] of Mother & Yolande.
