Self Denial Week Worlds WCTU

We went to the city second class (bo't 3d class but had to change them so smoking were the crowd returning from the Easter Holidays.) I went to the reception given me in London Medical Society Rooms by Soc for Study of Inebriety. It is (wisely) proposed to establish Industrial Homes for them-my contention in America for long. My nieces-Oliver's two tall, fine giris-came over from Berlin & are Lady Henry's guests.

No, this was Tuesday that "the foregoing" occurred, [i.e. what she wrote under Monday, 4/3 actually happened Tuesday 4/4] I wrote up hurriedly & afterward.
-Nan will soon be here-the little mindful loving, faithful one. And our Fan Barnes along with her. Am getting wonderfully through arrears thanks to days of dictation to Jubb-Jubb, Morell, & Edith. What flying is to walking, dictation is to "hand write." Glorious weather.

No such balmy, sunny spring weather in 80 years as this-so say the wise ones. Flowers out-orchards in bloom-birds back again! Sweet English birdies, posies, fields! I am in love with this same land-of my far back nativity! Isabel is with the Duchess & Alys Smith dear HWS's greatest success as a child is here with me. Has me in care! Read me to sleep from "The Heavenly Twins"-a new epoch bock-so said.

Oliver's girls doat on Somey Somerset & his beautiful ma. & no wonder! They have such softness & charm-such cosmopolitan outlook & the perfect unpretension of those who have no need to pretend! All our folks put in the day at Hampton Court but I fared on at my table & am nearer out o' the woods with my bunches of letters & ms. than in many a crowded year. O for the vigor of all the years till this one!

Isabel & I went to London after a grand morning's work. Met Sidney Webb the "scientific socialist" & his wife Beatrice Potter-brought up under influence & presence of Herbert Spencer-a most unique pair!
