Here's an attempt at poetry-Greek-graceful letters. First line:

"I came-I saw-I went"!

We see from below the site of the Prison of the Blacquermal.

Next-Jews Quarter all huddled [?] up as usual-in the midst of which is the former entrance to the Palace Grounds with a bas relief of the arch-angel Michael on the wall beside it-once whitewashed over & having still the marks thereof-

Fondness for light-houses arranged so as to give a bay window apiece

Big house painted black. Furore [?] of bay windows all down the street in the Greek quarter-Is it in memory of their sunny clime? Black women with veiled faces! (Dr. L.-approves the idea!)

Dr. L. enumerates 20 languages spoken currently in Constantinople-He was at a dinner party where 9 were in use.

Silver donkey-an ex voto [............... ] cow [............... ] doctor's remedy.

Evil eye. Crossing the bridge we "looked hard" at a pretty little child in its mother's arms. Dr. L. said: "If that little fellow is sick within a week his mother will lay it to you"!

-We spent a long while at Abdullah Freres selecting photographs of which he has an admirable collection. How well the sun-beam fixes on the plate [?]) these graceful forms of Saracenic architecture.

-A young lady (probably European) was having her photograph taken in a beautiful indoor Turkish costume-trailing skirt of blue silk-jacket blue & gold & gold thread cap set jauntily upon her head. "Her [?] of [?] the Harem" must be an enchanting creature- judging by the faces that look out upon us from the elegant European carriages in which "the women" of Pacha & Sultan take their daily ride.
