Hannah Smith came down this afternoon, and while Lady H. went to the Priory grounds to talk to the Y.W.T.A. Mrs. S. read Mrs. Besant's latest chapter to F. and I am sure was a comfort to her.
June 16, 1893
Another warm even oppressive day but quite bearable on the shady lawn. F. is behaving well about letters and contents herself with books and magazines most of the time. Poor Lady H. has had to go to suffrage meeting & then to her sister's for the night.

Hot-hotter-hottest! We fear Lady Henry will really suffer in the city. Bessie Shilston, very bright & individual spent the night here. F. has been out all day on the lawn. Lady H. returned about 4 P.M. Have answered many letters today. This is Bunker Hill's Anniversary.
June 18, 1893 [FEW entries from now on.]
On the lawn-nearly melted. Such a drought not known in 80 years-hardly a drop of rain for three months.
Am reading several books by biting into them. Huweis, [?] Green's Common People, History England, Taines & Emersons books on England, Shakespere, Kipling, G. Bernard Shaw & Ibsen, Blathway[?] interviews Stead's Review of Reviews &c-

Isabel & I were invited to meet party at Mr On[. . ] Huweis, the Lion Tamers" but I was forbidden to go & I was not able. It was too bad when cards were out. Dear Nan went to see Mrs. H. & explain as best she could. Day roasting hot. I am not ill but tired.

Isabel not able to go to Exeter Hall meeting. She is well nigh worn out.___________

Lady H with her sister at the Duchess' county seat. (That was Monday-Am scratching up this piece of drudgery afterward)

Sad sort of days because of contretemps. Duchess at Priory night & a day. Nan & I took nice ride together-beautiful Gaffin Park.
