summer outing; she looked trim and was very refined as always but with a face painfully worn & weary. Lady H. invited her to go with Mamie & her pupils to Eastnor Castle for a visit & to settle afterward for the summer at Malvern. Mary has excellent accounts of her 4 bairns. I believe Mother's hopes for Rob will yet be realized. Kate has just gone to America again. Hoodie here as often.

Republic's Day! And for the first time I have small sense of elation; for the first time I am ashamed of my country because of Chicago. Think of it! The Columbian Exposition managers-from every state-after getting millions from Congress on condition of not opening the Fair on Sunday have set at wo[...] & opened it- the money being spent! And verily this, in violation of Hyde Park law that says no liquor & Illinois law that says none to be sold on Fair or Exposition grounds "the management" (mis has farmed out the right to sell. Temperance people have buried themselves under speculation and blinded themselves with marvels. Am not proud-or have I a swollen liver?

Left dear Reigate at 9 & London at 11 AM (Remember hat episode!) Mary B. Willard & Mamie, Dr Bushnell & Little Andrew & Hoodie all at station Victoria-making with me 6 Americans! Mary & her girls go to Eastnor Castle tomorrow. Nan is with Fan Barnes & Gibbie at the sea side in Normandy. How the world top spins-The city is "all torn up" over the Buke [surely this should be "Duke"?] of York & Princess May's marriage- which 'hath nothing in me? The channel wonderfully calm but I was wonderfully sick. We came safely via Calais, Amiens Chalons &c. Wretched night. Lucerne at 9 AM.

We had a bath, breakfasted in our own parlor; Woodford the butler at Eastnor Castle & Mary the maid doing all they can for our comfort. Dear letter from Nan-she is in Normandy at the sea sick [transcript says "sick" but from context, should be "side"?] with Fan Barnes & Isabel Gibson-so glad of her getting a bit of rest & outing. We went to ride-so "calm, cool, bright" these mountains & this sky. We went to the cathedral and heard the great organ as Kate Jackson & I did 25 years ago. I felt how much was gone-how curiosity had lapsed-how the untiring spirit had wearied out the "little body-weary of this great world."

Rested pretty well till 5-then Cossie had to quiet me for an hour's rest longer. Dr. Kate Bushnell & dear Little Andrew came at 9. Had about such a set to as we had the day previous. We all breakfasted together-talking of many things as a quartette of
